An amalgamation of all the answers I got on a survey I did on how a woman can avoid being raped in India. Interesting isn't it?

And so terribly sad.

Reading this hurts but not because it's a bad text but because some people really seem to think this that all it needs to justify a rape is having a woman around wether it's a random one or friend or relative. No matter how much effort a woman puts in not attracting rapists they seem to see her as her sexual organs only (that's also the point where I see at least one reason why a burqa, religious veil etc. doesn't make sense).
It's depressing and this thinking finally shouldn't find place in modern times anywhere.

Dear god, these are based on real responses? That's sick! It certainly seems to fit most people's idea of rape, though. I wonder how the responses would change in a different country. Sadly, I'm sure that some of them would be the same.

Had I not read your note on this, I would have dismissed it as purely cynical. And you're right. It is terribly sad.

What I find the most depressing about this is that people- people who HAVEN'T been raped- believe that there is a simple answer as to how to not get raped. When in truth, there isn't.

As terrible as all crimes and especially rape are, a lot of this is very true. It is NOT the victims fault in these horrifying situations, but you need to make sure you're not putting your head on the chopping block as well.

Just don't be stupid, and you'll be doing pretty well; if that means keeping yourself healthy by not drinking, drugging, smoking and sleeping around, then you're only better off for it, right?

There's a healthy balance to be had here. Just look after yourselves, okay? You'll only be doing yourselves favours.

Your attitude is the very one which society dictates. I find it so sad that men can do ALL those things and women can't without the compulsive fear of being raped on their heads. How can smiling, visiting a monument, a shopping mall, having a boyfriend, being a lesbian be cause enough to being raped??? I don't see any justification behind any of these. Safety is all a state of mind, but giving someone a choice between being safe and being an individual is horrible.

We need to teach our sons not to rape, not tell our daughters how to not get raped.

Of course! I think you must've read too much into what I was saying. I just felt the need to point out that some of those things should be common sense, and come about because we care about ourselves. There is NO benefit in smoking or taking drugs, freedom and rights has nothing to do with it. And it applies to both genders too.

Yes, the list as a whole is horrifying and ridiculous, but people shouldn't take that as a reason to abuse their rights in a way that will cause harm to themselves. This view is purely from a health perspective.
