1.

Because they say that for every single boy who counts the stars, there is a little girl who is wishing upon one. (And they never mention what happens after the stars fade into morning and the other falls into oblivion)

2.

Because they say that people fall in love when the time is right, they are true to each other and are ready to be together. (But no one ever mentions how she is so damaged she can barely think, and he is so cynical that he may never be ready.)

3.

Because they insist that your soulmate is going to be a good, kind, caring human being who will love you from the bottom of their hearts. (This is due to the fact that even if there is someone for everyone, bad people are immune to the soulmate theory.)

4.

Because they always have a happy ending (And real life begins after the sun has set and she has realized that he may not be everything she hoped for and he begins to have second thoughts about commitment.)

5.

Because everything is assured in its predictability (And the trouble with predictability is that there is no room to be surprised.)

6.

Because there is such a thing as a big romantic gesture that makes everything all right. (And no one talks about what happens if she says no and that he’s made too many mistakes and her love for him has dried up.)

7.

Because even if I hate that every single thing they say is, and believe untrue, there is something that draws me back to them every single time. (It’s that stupid, tiny, romantic broken bone in my body that one day, I will find someone who tastes like gold, talks like silver and has a solid platinum heart too.)
Its an odd love/hate relationship.

And there are no movies that tell you what to do when you love her, but she can never love you, you are female. She could never think of it. And that hurts.

I'll honestly admit that you're spot on in this prose about romantic comedies. Though, to be honest with you, I'll have to disagree about the last point.

not because it is incorrect or anything - personal reasons, really. I'm a firm believer, that romantic comedies, are simply an escape. They're meant to be shallow, hollow, empty, dead weights which serve only to help us be satisfied with the idea, that one day, we'll be with the person we love. I don't know about love - my writing, I'll honestly admit, is limited to an ideal portrait of what love can be. Though even in that ideal portrait, I'm admitting that its the melancholic aspect which has the most appeal in it.

Which makes sense, if one thinks about it: love,  by nature, is melancholic. Which is why Romantic Comedies, in their presentation, plots, theme, and even in their portraits, are ironies and satires. Which would then place them in the category of... in my opinion... tragedies.

Because they represent a very unrealistic universe - an escape...

(shrug) I'm probably emotionally constipated... so I'll acknowledge that I didn't do justice to your prose. It deserves better - it really was well written.

Romantic comedies are a wish fulfillment fantasy, and it's something something people like to drown in sometimes. I think these fantasies just make you feel worse.

Also, finally someone gets it ---v

Just remember that every time you stuff things up, it's your job as a performer to do it on a massive scale for proper comedic effect. Life is a romcom.

Mm...Yes. And because the words "Romantic" and "Comedy" don't fit together, especially when the reality of romance is staying in love through fights, breakups, wounds, hurts, misunderstandings, arguments and every other trial that will test the grade of love as fire shapes the steel of the blade. And because romantic comedies tell me the lie that because my romance doesn't have "movie moments", that I'm settling for less in the woman I will marry - but I'm not, because my life isn't a romantic comedy, a romance novel, or any other such perfectly plastic thing; because my romance has passed the tests.
And there's my rant to add. Hah.
Not that this needed any addition; it's already perfect, and I agree.

The beautiful fictionality and practically impossibility of the rom-coms are why we love and hate them so much isn't it? Because its perfect and it can never happen.

You got quite a 'thread' going here, with folks agreeing and disagreeing with your seven points.

I think the last one you wrote is the real one for you and understand why it might be, and that's totally fine. Keep hoping.

Hope makes the world a better place, and as for rom-coms, nobody has to watch them.

Oh, and you're writing is as good as ever. Thanks. (:

I hate romantic comedies too, I think you make a lot of valid points here.
The thing I hate is the way they suggest you have to be in a relationship to be happy, when in actual fact this isn't true, first it depends on the relationship and secondly, like me, some people are happier when they are single.

Just giving the public what they think they want. Seeing as how the same basic script is made over and over while the execs grab rakes and bag pounds of cash, it's hard to imagine it will go away anytime soon.

Ok, that's good, you've made a list of reasons entirely respectable and understandable, the only issue with your argument is that Romantic Comedies are a genre that seem to be defiened under modern standards as a joke filled mockery, some sort of Seinfeld ism. If you were going by Greek Theatre standards your argument would be sound, but romantic comedy isn't what you say it is like that.

Oh goody, the anti-pop culture crowd has risen from their depths....I personally don't mind romantic comedies, they're predictably sappy and cliche'd for the sake of being so; we go to movies to escape from real life, why should rom-coms echo real life's drama, sadness, and depression when it comes to love? Rom-coms are an escape for people who just want their moment where everything goes right, even if it's not for them. It's a similar feeling to, say, when your favorite sports team wins a game. Plus, they usually cast really delectable women in lead roles, so I can't complain. :P

I feel I've seen enough movies N general 2 say that romantic comedies have a set predictability rate that most every genre of movie suffers from @ some point or another; NOT saying all movie genres R tha same just that they're equally predictable @ some point and it's usually tha 1's that set themselves 2 B "1 out of many" instead of the exception!

Another good work. I enjoyed that fact that it has the signature touch of your style , the monologue and addition of comments that flesh out the inner feeling of the narrator.

My reality always seems to take an extra effort to make my life so far away from any romantic movie that it is the opposite, a documentary about emotional abuse and depression. :P

Like, reality always seems to go that extra mile so that it is burned into the back of my eyeballs how fake romantic movies really are. x"D

The only problem with movies in general is idiots who don't know how to separate fantasy from reality. It's a movie; it's contents are usually meant to be fictional and unrealistic.

I kinda like romantic comedies, when they are not to sappy. But I hate when one of them cheats and the other forgives because its true love. Your true love shouldn't cheat on you, because in my opinion if they do they don't really love you or respect you.
This is a good portrait of what happens after "happly ever after", that might not survive in real life.
